Each school can apply for up to 12 hours per deadline for a total of 24 hours per school year.
Projects can range in size from 3 to 12 hours and they may involve one or more artists working with a group of students. Special projects involving a more in depth process can request to have up to 24 hours at one time. An example of this would be an artist working with a group of high school students through some practical workshops and portfolio preparation, or a couple of groups of elementary school students working with an artist on a project that would see each group spending 8 to 10 hours over several days studying and creating. If your school is applying for several 3 or 4 hour projects, you will need to divide them between the fall and winter deadlines, 12 hours each time.
Please send a separate application for each project. Each class/group would be a separate application. And, if one class/group is working with more than one artist, the project done with each artist would be a separate application. If you're not sure, call or write in to clarify.
Step One: Find an Artist
If you haven't already, now is the time to choose an artist or artists to work with. Look through the database and choose one who you'd like to work with. You can search by discipline. Contact them! Getting their input on the project early is crucial.
Filling Out the Form
Most of the application form is fairly self-explanatory. Below are some notes that may be helpful.
The form can be saved and returned to as long as you are working on the same device. It's a good idea to have already made notes and talked to the chosen artist about the details you need a few days before you submit your appllication. It's also not a bad idea to create a Word document to compose your application in - just in case of a glitch - then you won't have to start back at square one.
Section 1: Contact Information & Details
The name and address of the school, the core people involved,
A few facts...the dates, grade levels, number of students, artist hours, etc.
Section 2: Project Description
Begin by summing up your project in one or two sentences. From there, you can flesh out the details. Tell us a little bit about the process and the different elements of the work. What’s the idea? What is the medium? What will the artist teach the students? What product will be created (if any) and how will it be achieved? What media will you be working in? This section should be written by the project artist, or in communication with them. You might want to ask them to write it up and email it to the teacher to cut & paste into the application form.
The timeline also really helps us to understand how the project will unfold. You can do it hour by hour or day by day, depending on your project

What materials, if any, will you need to purchase for this project?
Section 4: Travel
We encourage schools to work with artists that live close by. We know in rural areas more travel is needed, of course, and we're happy to support that. We just need to keep tabs on our spending and, of course, we prioritize spending our funds on artists' time with students and materials wherever possible. Do check. There may be a terrific artist closer than you think!
Section 5: PAINTS Agreement
This is your contract with PAINTS and the artist. It's brief, but important. Please read it carefully. Teachers, please "sign" the form, just to confirm that you've read the guidelines, the application form, and so we know who to call or write to with questions.
Section 6: Payment
You can pay by sending in a cheque or calling with a credit card.
The payment is due when you apply. We hold it in trust until projects are reviewed and funding decisions are made.
